Peace in Every Heart this Christmas

This Week in Peace is a weekly column chronicling the exciting adventures of San Jose's own Dancer of Peace, Khalilah Ramirez. Written under divine inspiration, this column contains true stories of peace encounters in your neighborhood. Khalilah sends blessings of peace this holiday season and writes about how her last performance helped create peace in every heart watching and how you can start your own simple practice.

Greetings to all! Welcome to 'This Week In Peace,' a column that reveals what occurs when the shining energy of peace is purposefully projected out into the world for the benefit of each of our citizens.

This week was wet and cold! It was a welcome change to be indoors. The Dance of Peace was launched at Caffe Frascati in downtown San Jose. The event was affectionately called South Bay Poets Slamiversary. A talented organization of poets were celebrating one year of thriving here. Being a slam poet is not easy! It seemed confrontational and laborious, yet the performers took it all in stride. They created exciting works about their multifaceted experiences of life. Topics ranged from social justice to first kisses to car crashes and losing friends. The work was deeply moving.

During a break in the competition, the Dance of Peace was scheduled to help ring in 2016 with an elevated vibration of peace that all could share. The Dance of Peace has one goal: Peace in Every Heart! Having a singular and focused purpose makes this work very simple to grasp. It takes only a moment to explain what is being done and why. This audience took to it immediately!

That day, we united classic rock style with Aerosmith's anthem “Dream On.” It is a song for winners. A dreamer becomes a winner when that person is able to effectively, DREAM ON. These inspiring words are also the chorus of the song, which the audience knew. We sang, clapped and shouted together and that is how the Dance of Peace works! By aiming to lift hands and hearts in the spirit of togetherness. Thanks to South Bay Poets for making this possible!

There are numerous other ways to create peace in the heart. Why does this matter? The short answer is that when a heart is at peace, it flowers naturally. It becomes effortless to give and receive. The following is an exercise that can help to facilitate inner peace. This practice is great because:

  • It is brief
  • No one will know
  • It is free of charge
  • It is a challenge

FIND a quiet place. LOOK at yourself. SPEAK a short phrase of love to yourself. WATCH yourself as you do this. NOTE whatever it is that you experience. That's all!

If this practice seems weird or creepy, repeat it until it feels right! It is a method that peacefully fuses mind and body. If you have positive results, tell someone and that person may become curious and try it, too. Enjoy and see you out there!
