A Reminder to Awaken the Rhythm of Your Own Personal Dance

This Week in Peace chronicles the exciting adventures of San Jose's own Dancer of Peace, Khalilah Ramirez. Written under divine inspiration, this column contains true stories of peace encounters in your neighborhood. Earlier this week the Dance of Peace closed out Black History Month with a special celebration at Yahoo! with a reminder of how dance naturally elevates us into feeling freedom and joy

Welcome to This Week in Peace, the column that relates triumphant tales of peace dancing. The motive behind all of this connecting with each other then sharing it in writing is a pure one: Peace in every heart. It is lovely to engage others while employing this intention!

Last Thursday, after a busy performance schedule, we ended Black History Month with a bang! The 'bang' was a completely celebratory environment in effect at Yahoo's beautiful Sunnyvale campus. United with my team, Akoma Arts, we performed for a large, lively audience. For the record, the tech company's atmosphere is just like the legends. Beautifully groomed, immaculate, sprawling grounds, a luxurious workplace featuring games and comfortable couches. Well-appointed, color-coordinated meeting rooms and an enormous cafeteria that provided FREE food to all of its employees!

Black History stage at Yahoo!
It was exciting to be there, receiving a warm welcome from all the 'yahoos' (their inside name for themselves). We begin each and every performance with an invocation, calling on the Great Divine Source. The hope here is to awaken everyone to the present moment using the power of the drum, singing and dance!

A side note on dance: Dance is a magical tool for opening the heart and creating peace. Dance is available to anyone at any time. Some may hesitate because they don't "know how" to dance. There is no need to know anything! Simply find some music or some silence and begin moving the body around. Do so with a feeling of playful nonattachment. Once the movement gets started, the mind will naturally think less. All of the thoughts that cause doubt will begin to fade. Dance will effortlessly raise the heart rate. This changes the level at which the entire body vibrates in a positive manner.

Additionally, it is enchantment to awaken within the rhythm of our own personal dance! We create the wind surrounding our bodies in that moment. Time may speed up, slow down or seem to stop completely. Witness the very real sensations of freedom and joy. These words describe just a few of the possibilities of elevation that dance provides.

Getting back to Yahoo, we put these concepts into practical application. The audience was enthusiastically responsive! They were surprisingly diverse in age as well, from teenagers all the way to seniors in their 70's. When it was time for them to join us on stage, we had a wonderful time exchanging dance moves from different times! The performance was streamed live to all the Yahoo campuses around the globe. This gave it a unique feeling international influence. Thanks to Yahoo for your invitation, hospitality and openness. Thanks for reading and see you out there!
