Campaign to Remove San Jose Police Officer White and Coverage of the Protect Your People March

Media, tweets, instagrams, and video of the campaign to remove SJPD Officer White after he made threatening and insulting tweets in reference to those across the country protesting the death of Mike Brown and Eric Garner. The march also drew attention to San Jose officer involved shootings including the death of Antonio Guzman Lopez. His partner Laurie Valdez has lead a movement calling for accountability for those who took his life. At the march, she addressed the DA directly.

An Open Letter to San Jose Police Officer Phillip White (The Cop Who Threatened Protesters and Mocked #ICantBreathe)

San Jose Police Officer Phillip White put out a series of tweets threatening and mocking protesters. He wrote, "“By the way if anyone feels they can’t breathe or their lives matter I’ll be at the movies tonight, off duty, carrying my gun.” He also wrote he had a, " “God given and law appointed right and duty to kill." As communities across the country express outrage over the grand jury decision not to indict Darrell Wilson for the killing of Michael Brown, another relevant case from the area is proceeding to trial. Sylvester Caldwell, the Mayor of Pine Lawn, a neighboring town to Ferguson has been indicted on federal charges of extortion. The following is a video from Pine Lawn and Ferguson residents describing the political corruption in these small municipalities that allowed for the racially targeted police violence to fester. The footage was captured when De-Bug producers were in the Ferguson area just two weeks before the shooting death of Michael Brown. Remembering Antonio Guzman Lopez: Family of SJ State Police Shooting Death Holds Birthday Celebration

On November 15, 2014, Antonio Guzman Lopez's family gathered to celebrate what would have been his 39th birthday. In February of this year, Antonio was shot and killed by San Jose State Police officers Mike Santos and Frits Van Der Hoek. Antonio left behind his partner Laurie, and his children -- 5 year old Josiah and daughter Angelique. Almost 7 months later, the Santa Clara County District Attorney has yet to complete their investigation as to whether the shooting was justified. In the meantime, his family -- through the leadership of Laurie Valdez -- launched the Justice for Josiah campaign to seek accountability for their loved one's death. A humble man who loved his children above everything, Antonio was remembered last Saturday among family, community, and supporters who pledged to support Antonio's family through the long road ahead.

San Jose Youth Respond to Use of Pepper Spray in Juvenile Hall

Starting this month, Santa Clara Juvenile Hall staff will be allowed to use pepper spray on youth. The policy was not vetted through public discussion, but rather was negotiated in by the Probation Peace Officers Union. The Mercury News reports concerns from advocates, experts, and judges. De-Bug asked San Jose teenagers their thoughts. Below are a sampling of responses we recieved from youth from San Jose high schools and probation programs through our running workshop series. St. Louis Community Leader Jamala Rodgers: "We are All Mike Brown"

As a community organizer, Jamala Rogers been working to protect and provide opportunities to black and brown youth for decades in North St.Louis. In a reflection of Mike Brown's killing, the resulting protests, and the national spotlight on Ferguson, she writes that youth have seen the "ending of this movie" before. De-Bug had the great fortune to meet Rogers when were in St.Louis doing a social biography video for a capital case just weeks before the killing of Michael Brown. She was referred to us by locals as someone who could explain the political, social, and cultural realities of the city.
